I grew up in Queenstown in the hotel industry and from the age of 16 worked in the adventure tourism industry including jet boating and helicopter operations. I travelled overseas to work for a helicopter company and upon returning to New Zealand moved to Christchurch. I enjoy working with people and thrive on a challenge. Improving safety culture is one of those challenges and I am fully committed to working with companies to ensure safety becomes a solution not a chore. I believe the commitment to workplace safety has to be lead and demonstrated from the top, a positive safety culture takes time and effort and you need to have the buy in of all people involved.
I am a registered trainer assessor with Competenz. At present I am studying to achieve my NEBOSH diploma.
I am an active parent in my children’s sport of rugby and netball and have coached netball for a number of years.
In a sports team you are only as good as your weakest player – safety is much the same, if we are not winning at safety we need to change the game plan.

Rowan Monk – Consultant
I have been involved in Health and Safety for the past 7 years where most of my time has been spent in the Forest Industry as a Health and Safety Coordinator. Prior to that, I had spent about 13 years gaining experience in the forest industry, working in logging crews and as a Silviculture Contractor.
Ironically health and safety came about by accident. I had just completed my National Diploma in Forest Management when an opportunity came up for a position as a health and safety coordinator so I gave it a go and I have enjoyed the challenges it has brought me so far.
I am passionate about what I do, I enjoy engaging with people and discussing the merits of implementing a positive and proactive Health & Safety culture. I look forward to having that conversation with you soon. Until then, be safe!
Wayne Henman – Consultant/Trainer Forestry
I grew up in Nelson and began logging in that region in 1990 working in a tower crew. In 1996 I moved to Whakatane to work in a swing yarder crew and then worked in a tower crew for the same contractor gaining experience in all parts of the operation i.e. felling, breaking out, landing operations and machine operating. In recent years forestry has seen some big improvements in work practices and Health and Safety procedures, but there are still far too many accidents.
In 2011 I became a trainer/assessor for COMPETENZ and began working for SafeTworks. I am based in Whakatane and work with forestry crews throughout the BOP and a couple in Gisborne.
I am realistic in my approach and understand the importance of working with the crew at all levels to implement better safety measures. When I’m not working I enjoy family life, hunting and fishing.
My husband and I were in the process of starting an adventure tourism activity (Ruapehu Adventure Rides) then the health and safety changed. Wve were very lucky to have been passed on Safe T Works details. Paula and her team are amazing they have developed our H&S system which successfully passed an audit. We still work with Paula and her team to make sure we are up to date with any changes. Thank you Karl and Maria Splitt.

SUMMIT FORESTS NZ
We have found Paula and her team to be experts in the field of Health & Safety in the Forestry industry which has helped us keep up to date and compliant within our sector.
Paula’s initial incentive was to get us to Secondary Level in the ACC WSMP, which we achieved within the year. This motivation led us to Tertiary Level two years later and a Gold Level rating in the new ACC Fleetsaver practices.
Paula and her team are invaluable to our improving Health & Safety and we are well respected in our industry because of it.
